Five Things a Security System Can Do Besides Keep Your Home Secure

The first and most important role of a security system is to protect your home, but many modern security systems go way beyond that. Wondering what a security system may be able to do? Depending on the type of system, here are some possibilities.

1. Connect to Lights, Thermostat or Other Systems

Many smart security systems can connect to other systems in your home. In particular, you may be able to connect your lights, your thermostat or your door locks. Then, if you forget to lock the door, turn off the lights or change the thermostat, you can easily handle all of that from the app connected to your security system.

2. See When People Come Into Your Home

Consider getting a security system that allows different people to have unique codes for your home. Then, set up your system so that you get an alert whenever someone comes or leaves from your home. If you have childcare workers, housekeepers, teenagers or others coming and going, this can be a useful way to keep tabs on them whether you are home or not.

3. Make Sure Toddlers Don't "Escape"

Even with a very simple security system, you can disable the system so that it doesn't alert the monitoring station when someone comes and goes through the doors, but have it beep if someone comes in or out of your doors. If you have small children in the home, that beep can be especially useful. For instance, if you go into the laundry room and are away from your child for a couple of minutes, the beep can immediately alert you if your toddler tries to "escape" out the front door.

4. Check on Babysitters

This is also useful for people with small children. If you have video cameras integrated into your system, you can check on your childminders when you are not home. Similarly, you can check in on tutors, housekeepers, unsupervised teenagers or anyone else who is on your home.

5. Let in Delivery People

If you set up a camera by your front door, you can even let in delivery people remotely. To explain, imagine you are not home, a delivery person buzzes at the door, and you use the app to see who's standing at the doorway. Then, you can remotely unlock the door to let in the delivery person, and once they are gone, you can then use the security system app to lock the door behind them.

Features like this make a security system useful, regardless of whether or not you are worried about crime. To learn about other useful features, contact a security system specialist.
